Recent advances in technologies of communication and transportation have increased flows of people, capital, information, goods and services, and have created greater competition for access to markets.

In order to respond to these challenges of globalization and to enable businesses as well as civil society organizations and local communities to take advantage of the many opportunities these changes provide it is vital to understand what local resources and global connections are available and how they can be effectively used.
