Heart attacks, strokes, and accidents are leading causes of death and disability in low income communities. And there are few people living in these communities who are trained in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) device, or in first aid. World Resources Chicago helped to formalize a cooperative agreement between the American Red Cross and Northwestern University. Since 2017 the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago and Northern Illinois has provided training for Northwestern University Community Health Corps students to become certified instructors for Pediatric and Adult AED/CPR and First Aid. As part of this agreement Northwestern student instructors are allowed to train low income community members in Chicago, Evanston and Skokie in the use of AED equipment, CPR techniques and first aid information without charge.
